-Oxford dictionary defines family as “a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.”
-Lovetoknow states “Family may seem like a simple concept, but there is no simple definition of family. In its most basic terms, a family is a group of individuals who share a legal or genetic bond, but for many people, family means much more, and even the simple idea of genetic bonds can be more complicated than it seems.”
-Business dictionary defines family as “a social unit of two or more persons related by blood, marriage, or adoption and having a shared commitment to the mutual relationship. See also household”.
There are many different definitions for the family. Why has the most basic unit of our existence become so confusing to our world? The law has been changed to include “A group of persons living together and having a shared commitment to a domestic relationship.” This is almost contradictory to the definition that Heavenly father provides for us. It is said that a family is with a father, a mother, and children. There are many issues that have risen in the last 5 years about the topic of family and marriage.
There is now a federal law that any two people can be married. I believe that marriage is to be between a man and a woman. This is essential to our happiness. There is a reason that this was the law and the way that everyone did things. The idea of a man and a woman being married was passed on from our ancestors, all the way back to Adam and Eve. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wrote in their Family Proclamation “THE FAMILY is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan.” I love how they say that marriage is ESSENTIAL and that it is between a man and a woman.
This can be a hard topic for many different people throughout the world. There are people that feel that if two people love each other then they should be able to be together no matter if it is two men, two women, or a man and a woman. Although saying that people should be able to love who they want, is a very good point, it is not part of God’s plan for our ETERNAL happiness. Now I know that a lot of people would then reply that a “loving” heavenly father would want us to be able to choose what makes us happy, in which I agree with as well, I believe that sometimes Heavenly Father knows what’s best for us more than we do. I also believe that there are things and creatures that are present on this Earth that they are determined to ruin Gods plan and make humanity eternally miserable along with them.
On this Earth and in this life, we are focused on our temporal happiness. This means that we focus on the here and now and not on the bigger picture of our existence. After this Earth life, we are destined for bigger, better, and holier things. Sometimes, something that makes us happy now won’t make us eternally happy and our Earth life is such a small and minimal part of our eternity of existence. So why would we risk losing an eternity of happiness for something that keeps us “happy” here on Earth?
All of this is not to say that being a part of the LGBTQ+ community is a bad thing, but there is a possibility that it could not be the greatest for our eternal salvation and to be able to return to our Heavenly Father.
The family has been a very confusing topic for many people and a very controversial topic for the world. When things become too complicated to be explained in short, it is time to resort back to the basics. Father, mother, and children. That is the core of a family.
